Venue: Hockessin Friends Meetinghouse
We make decisions that involve the Meeting as a whole by assembling in a monthly meeting for business. These gatherings are treated as a meeting for worship and begin with a short period of expectant silence. Because Quakers believe in “that of God in every one,” care is taken to hear the perspectives of each one present. Rather than voting and settling for majority rule, Quakers seek unity as perceived in a “sense of the meeting.” While the process resembles decision-making by consensus, Quakers are listening to the gathered voices in order to discern God’s will for the meeting. A “clerk” facilitates the meeting for business, and a “recording clerk” summarizes the decisions of the monthly meeting in written minutes.

We gather and meet in silence to listen to that of God within and speak only when led to do so. Because everyone has that of God in them, anyone may speak. Friends usually pause between messages to allow the words to be fully appreciated. The end of meeting for worship is marked by shaking hands or otherwise greeting one another.

The Hockessin Friends Adult First Day Group (AFDS) meets on the last two Sundays of the month. When there are five Sundays in a month, we meet on the last three Sundays. We do not meet in the month of July. The group meets at 9:30am in the library and on Zoom. All are welcome to join. If you'd like to be added to the group email list, send a note to ReligiousEd@HockessinQuaker.org.
The goal of AFDS Group is to deepen and strengthen our belief in Quaker values and continue our individual growth along our spiritual journeys. We do this in various ways. For instance, the group has engaged in Friendly Bible Studies, reading articles from “Friends Journal,” and discussing general queries posed to the Quaker Community. Currently (in early 2025), the group is exploring the Gospel of Thomas. Topics the group explores are decided upon by regular attenders of the group.
The AFDS Group guides the selection and design of the lessons or readings selected. It usually addresses main ideas or queries Friends may be struggling with or arise from conversations during previous meetings. Other times, lessons or readings are selected to assist Friends with spiritual growth in areas they need. Generally, the group sessions are designed to provide Friends with an opportunity to explore, discuss and strengthen their faith in God.

Hockessin Friends members and attenders are invited to participate in the next meeting of the Social Justice Book Club, which will meet on Saturday, May 24, 10:00am-noon, at the meetinghouse. The book selected for this meeting is: Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey
The publisher describes the book as follows:
Disrupt and push back against capitalism and white supremacy. In this book, Tricia Hersey, aka The Nap Bishop, encourages us to connect to the liberating power of rest, daydreaming, and naps as a foundation for healing and justice.
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace –– feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit.
In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted. Our worth does not reside in how much we produce, especially not for a system that exploits and dehumanizes us. Rest, in its simplest form, becomes an act of resistance and a reclaiming of power because it asserts our most basic humanity. We are enough. The systems cannot have us.
Rest Is Resistance is rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, womanism, somatics, and Afrofuturism. With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Hersey’s lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in theology, activism, and performance art, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action, a battle cry, a field guide, and a manifesto for all of us who are sleep deprived, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture.

Hockessin Friends members and attenders are invited to participate in the next meeting of the Social Justice Book Club on Saturday, July 19, 10am-noon, at the meetinghouse. The book selected for this meeting is: The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
The publisher describes the book as follows:
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.”
As Elizabeth Gilbert writes, Robin Wall Kimmerer is “a great teacher, and her words are a hymn of love to the world.” The Serviceberry is an antidote to the broken relationships and misguided goals of our times, and a reminder that “hoarding won’t save us, all flourishing is mutual.”

We gather and meet in silence to listen to that of God within and speak only when led to do so. Because everyone has that of God in them, anyone may speak. Friends usually pause between messages to allow the words to be fully appreciated. The end of meeting for worship is marked by shaking hands or otherwise greeting one another.
